The Panthers have a new offensive coaching staff in place following the hire of former Baylor coach Matt Rhule and former LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady in Carolina.

Those Carolina fans eager to see how Cam Newton could potentially fit into the team’s new offensive scheme may not get that chance as the Panthers announced on Tuesday that the star quarterback has been given the freedom to pursue a trade this offseason.

One rumored potential landing spot for Newman is in Los Angeles, where the Chargers currently do not have a starting quarterback committed for the 2020 season as Phillip Rivers is also being given the freedom to test the free agency market.

Following Carolina’s decision to allow Newton to explore trade options, Panthers GM Marty Hurney issued the following statement:

“One of the distinct pleasures of my career was selecting Cam with the first pick in the 2011 draft. Every year difficult decisions are made and they are never easy. We have been working with Cam and his agent to find the best fit for him moving forward and he will always be a Carolina Panther in our hearts.”

Newton’s entire NFL career has been played in Carolina after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Newton was named NFL MVP in 2015 after leading the Panthers to an appearance in the Super Bowl.
