If there was any doubt on Cam Newton’s status in Carolina, the star quarterback appears to have slammed the door on any potential return to the Panthers.

Carolina announced on Tuesday that Newton has been given permission to seek a trade to another team.

The team issued the following statement from Panthers GM Marty Hurney confirming the news:

“One of the distinct pleasures of my career was selecting Cam with the first pick in the 2011 draft. Every year difficult decisions are made and they are never easy. We have been working with Cam and his agent to find the best fit for him moving forward and he will always be a Carolina Panther in our hearts.”

Of course, Carolina hired a new coach this offseason as Matt Rhule was hired away from Baylor. Rhule then turned around and named former LSU passing coordinator Joe Brady Carolina offensive coordinator.

It would appear the new regime in Carolina is preparing to move on from Newton.

Check out Newton’s response on social media to the official Panthers team account in which he denies he wanted to be traded and claims the team forced this upon him:

Newton’s entire NFL career has been played in Carolina after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Newton was named NFL MVP in 2015 after leading the Panthers to an appearance in the Super Bowl.
