Cam Newton rejects possibility of Deuce Knight wearing No. 2 jersey at Auburn in 2025
Cam Newton addressed the possibility of Auburn signee Deuce Knight wearing his famous No. 2 jersey while playing for the Tigers during a recent episode of 4th&1 with Cam Newton.
In his official signing graphic, Knight wore a No. 2 jersey and gave a nod to Newton’s historic 2010 season. “It’s time to turn this program around!!” Knight told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. “We bringing the 2010-2011 vibes back to the plains.”
Suffice it to say, Newton isn’t a fan of the idea of Knight wearing his jersey number — at least not until Knight has proven himself.
“It’s a f— no for me,” Newton said before adding Knight should earn the right to wear that number.
“You will not be wearing No. 2, especially not your first year,” Newton added. “I just don’t want to nuke my product like that … it’s like, create your own legacy. I did.”
Newton also expressed concerns over giving permission to allow an unproven quarterback to don a No. 2 jersey given Auburn’s struggles at that position since his departure more than a decade ago.
“Because the quarterback play over the years at Auburn has been egregious,” Newton said. “It’s been satanic. It has been something that … I can’t even watch a game. And that’s a shot at all players who have played and all coaches who have allowed them to play.”
While Newton’s No. 2 jersey hasn’t officially been retired by Auburn, it’s certainly revered within the program given what the former Heisman Trophy winner accomplished while he was on the Plains. Most notably, he led Auburn to the 2010 National Championship — which still stands as the program’s most recent title and is only its 2nd claimed title overall.
Here’s a clip of Newton talking about the subject:
Auburn has formally retired 3 jersey numbers: Pat Sullivan’s No. 7, Bo Jackson’s No. 34 and Terry Beasley’s No. 88. It’s unclear if Auburn has plans to formally retire No. 2 in the future, but no Auburn player has worn that number since Newton’s departure.
Knight was a huge recruiting win for Hugh Freeze and Auburn in the class of 2025. He finished the cycle as the No. 34 overall prospect and the No. 5 quarterback in this class. He was previously committed to Notre Dame.
