Cam Newton led New England to a 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins in his Patriots debut. His 155 passing yards and 75 rushing yards weren’t the only reasons he made headlines. After the game, Newton was part of a scrum at midfield where he had to be restrained by coaches and teammates.

Newton was asked about what happened when he met with reporters after the game. Newton initially chalked it up to being competitive.

“It was a competitive game – on both sides. You just have to realize who you’re talking to, and just keep everything in the game,” Newton began his answer.

Newton had some shade for former Clemson defender Christian Wilkins.

“I realized I was talking to a person that’s known for doing splits. So it wasn’t characteristic of me to keep going back and forth,” Newton said.

When asked directly, Newton confirmed opposing players tried to steal his chain.

“I still got my chain. I got two of ’em. They were reaching for my chain, though,” Newton said. “And I think that kind of got up under my skin.”

Newton’s full answers to both questions can be viewed in a press conference transcript shared by Alert Breer of The MMQB:
