Chad Morris staying in the SEC, named offensive coordinator at Auburn
Big news on The Plains as it didn’t take long for Gus Malzahn to find his next offensive coordinator.
Malzahn has tabbed former Arkansas head coach Chad Morris as the next Auburn offensive coordinator. This move was necessary after Kenny Dillingham left Auburn for Memphis.
Malzahn released the following statement on the news:
“I’m super excited to have Chad Morris join our staff at Auburn. He’s a tremendous offensive mind who has had success with several top-ranked offenses during his time in the college ranks. I’ve known Chad for almost 20 years and he is a tireless worker and a perfectionist. He is a great addition to our program and I look forward to him helping Auburn win championships!”
Morris lasted less than two seasons at Arkansas before being dismissed by the program following a 45-19 loss to Western Kentucky. Morris had a record of 4-18 at Arkansas.
Auburn’s new offensive coordinator also added these comments expressing his gratitude for the opportunity.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Malzahn’s staff at Auburn. I’ve known Gus since the early 2000s and consider him a dear friend and someone that helped me get into the profession at the college level. I’ve admired the success he’s had at each of his stops and look forward to adding to the success that he, his staff and the players have built. We are excited about joining the Auburn family.”
Auburn announced the news with the following post:

First committ 5/11 178 lbs Chandler Morris,
The big question now is Gus going to hand reins over to Morris to run the offense?
You better hope not. Did you watch the Hogs this year?
He couldn’t even if he tried.
So this is Offensive Coordinator in name only, like previous Auburn OCs. Gus is funny.
2 coaches who don’t have a clue how to run an offense.
wouldn’t be the first unsuccessful head coach to be an extremely good coordinator (Kevin Steele). WDE and welcome to Auburn
This was announced two hours ago, so I’m guessing Gus has already started “meddling” with “Chad’s offense”.
Dillingham is at FSU, not Memphis.
I was going to point that out, but you beat me to it. SDS articles at their finest for you with fact-checking
This is a really great hire by Auburn, but we all know Gus won’t let him implement his system fully.
Careful: you’ll choke on all that kool aid.
I’m very excited about this hire. Chad Morris may not have been a very good head coach, but his record as an offensive coordinator is pretty good. His offensive style fits Auburn’s offense like a glove because he learned his offense from Malzahn. I just hope Malzahn will have enough confidence in his hire to let him do his job rather than trying to manage everything.
As a Hog fan, I agree this will be a good hire if Gus lets him do his job. Morris was awful as a Head Coach, but being an OC is totally different and I think he’ll be fine. Just don’t let him draw up fake punts. Trust me.
I think Auburn is best suited to keep him away from the drawing board when it comes to fake punts. On the other hand, I’m hoping tight ends might become a thing in our offense.
Great comment. Your fake punt line was hilarious!
What was up with that play anyway???
Morris actually said after that game that the play worked in practice. So I guess the punt return unit was a disaster as well. That play epitomized the Morris era: hapless failure.
Saying he learned his offense from malzahn is not a good thing
Just because you are the OC doesn’t mean you call the plays nor implement the offense.. some of y’all are football illiterate
Well it does every where in the country except at Auburn, I’m sure Gus saw some of his Football for Dummies play calling this year. He’ll be talking in the headset and flipping cards.
Lincoln Riley, Ryan Day, Joe Moorhead, Dana Holgerson, Mike Norvell, Chip Kelly, Scott Frost, Mike Leach and Jimbo Fisher all call plays.
Somebody please coach me up….does Chad Morris get his complete buyout from Ark and gets this job too?
No. Whatever he gets at Auburn reduces what Arkansas owes him. If Auburn pays him $1 million per season, Arkansas saves $1 million per season.
Which means he’s working at Auburn for the cheap price of almost free while Arky foots the bill for him to help further develop a conference rival’s offense.
Not sure what Auburn is paying him, but if it’s clearly way below market value, then Arkansas should give him the Bert treatment and not pay him for violating his contract to seek employment elsewhere in good faith.
He was good oc at clemson
