Johni Broome had to leave Auburn’s game against Georgia State on Tuesday night with a shoulder injury.

According to coach Bruce Pearl after the game, Broome’ shoulder briefly “came out” of place — something he’s dealt with before. Pearl sounded optimistic that Broome would be OK sooner rather than later.

“His right shoulder came out and came right back,” Pearl said. “He did it a year ago so he’s had some experience with it. We’ll take a look at it tomorrow and tell you more. But we hope he’s going to be OK.”

Pearl also said he’d expect 6-foot-7 Chaney Johnson to move into Auburn’s starting lineup if Broome has to miss significant time.

As for Broome’s injury, the severity remains unclear. He ultimately returned to Auburn’s bench after suffering the injury, but with his right shoulder in a sling.

As Pearl mentioned, Broome did deal with this injury a season ago. He didn’t miss any games last season, but the injury occurred during a preseason exhibition game. It’s unclear if Broome will be able to manage the injury as well this season with Auburn’s schedule already in full swing.

Auburn is the No. 1 team in the country, according to KenPom’s latest ratings. Broome is a huge reason why the Tigers have been so effective to start the year. He’s averaging 18.1 points and 11.5 rebounds so far this season while shooting 55.3% from the floor. Broome is also averaging a career-high 3.5 assists per contest through the first 11 games of the season.

Auburn will face Purdue on Saturday before wrapping up nonconference play against Monmouth on Dec. 30. The Tigers’ first SEC game of the season is on Jan. 4 against Mizzou.
