ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — For those anxiously waiting to see the Muschamp effect on recruiting, keep waiting.

Auburn lost out on several prized targets over the weekend as several prospects snubbed the Tigers at the Under Armour All-America Game, along with the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday in San Antonio.

Upon his hiring on Dec. 12, Muschamp hit the road recruiting trying to keep the Tiger’s class of current commitments on board while trying to sway several uncommitted targets. His recruiting credentials are unquestioned, but the new Auburn defensive coordinator is going to recruit a different type of player than former Tigers defensive head Ellis Johnson.

The two most notable misses are four-star defensive tackle Daron Payne from Birmingham, Ala., who chose Alabama over Auburn on Friday at the Under Armour game, and wide receiver Tyron Johnson who selected in-state LSU over the Tigers.

Though Johnson is not a defensive prospect, it’s a huge miss and symbolizes Auburn’s ability to capture the top recruits in the southeast. Payne is the blow from which Auburn needs to respond. Upon his introduction at Auburn on Dec. 13, Muschamp traveled to Birmingham and met with Payne. Muschamp’s hiring was believed to be huge in the eyes of Payne, and while nothing in recruiting is solidified until National Signing Day, Payne sounded convinced in an interview with Saturday Down South on Friday.

Head coach Gus Malzahn and company lost out more targets during Saturday’s Army Bowl. Massive defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and defensive end D’Andre Walker both resisted Auburn and chose Oklahoma and Georgia, respectively.

While none of those may necessarily be described as a shock, Malzahn enters a crucial third year on the Plains and with fans expecting sought-after recruits to become locks with Muschamp, his effect on recruiting has yet to be felt.

“I think we need some D-Linemen and stuff, but it will turn out to be good,” Auburn commit Richard McBryde told Saturday Down South.

With the dead period set to end in 10 days, the Malzahn, Muschamp and the Tigers’ coaching staff will work to flip the guys they lost on during the weekend.

However, several big-time uncommitted prospects are still in play and Saturday’s addition of new defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson should bode well for Auburn.

The nation’s top prospect Martez Ivey is down to Florida and Auburn, and many expected Ivey to move the Tigers into the top spot upon Muschamp’s addition to the staff. The Apopka, Fla., native has moved back his decision date while the Gators and Tigers fight for his services.

Muschamp made a huge play over the weekend following Friday’s Under Armour game in St. Petersburg, as Auburn offered Iman Marshall, the top cornerback in the 2015 class. The Long Beach, Calif., native is expected to take an official visit to Auburn this month and picking him out from under USC and UCLA could have an enormous trickle down effect on Auburn’s 2015 class.

Several uncommitted prospects remain interested in Auburn. Five-star defensive ends CeCe Jefferson, Byron Cowart and Terry Beckner, Jr. and four-star linebacker Jeffrey Holland are all in play for the Tigers and Muschamp’s ability to land them, in addition to Marshall, could have enormous effects on his defense heading into 2015.

He still has plenty of time to land several coveted recruits. So far, Auburn’s new defensive coordinator has struck out on the recruiting trail, but his batting average can skyrocket during the coming weeks.
