Gus Malzahn made headlines earlier in the week for hiring Al Borges, former Auburn offensive coordinator from 2004-07, to his staff as an off-field analyst. Borges’ former boss thinks it’s a smart hire by the current AU coach.

“That’s a great move for Gus Malzahn,” Tommy Tuberville told AL.com’s Mark Heim. “They desperately needed someone to come in and help them with their passing game. There is no better coach that I have ever been around that knew about the pro (style) passing attack than Al Borges.

“He was very exceptional at teaching (former Auburn and NFL quarterback) Jason Campbell the techniques and fundamentals of being a very good quarterback. I’m excited for Auburn. It is going to help them.”

At only 169.5 yards per game through the air, Auburn’s passing game was ranked last in the SEC and No. 112 nationally. That is expected to change drastically this season with the addition of QB Jarrett Stidham, who went 16-of-20 passing for 267 yards in last week’s A-Day spring game. While Tuberville had high praise for Borges as a quarterbacks coach, Malzahn only hired him as an analyst, an off-field role.

“But he’s going to be in meetings and making suggestions,” Tuberville said. “That’ll be a good start. Chip Lindsey, the new coordinator, really hasn’t been in college football that long. Al will be able to help Chip Lindsey formulate things that will work in the conference. Al’s been in the SEC. He’s been in big-time football his whole life. I think it’s a great plus for Auburn.”

With his extensive background as an offensive coordinator, Borges may be a candidate for an on-field position when coaching staffs expand to 10 assistants in January 2018.

The former Auburn coach is considering a run for governor in Alabama, and also discussed state politics with Heim in the full article here.
