Female reporters have been around the sports world for a long time now, asking insightful questions and writing thoughtful articles — otherwise known as doing their jobs.

However, apparently former Auburn QB Cam Newton didn’t get that memo, as he had an odd comment when a female reporter asked him a question about route running in Wednesday’s press conference.

When Jourdan Rodrigue, a reporter for the Charlotte Observer, asked about the physicality of Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess’s routes, he seemed taken aback by the question:

The full context of Newton’s remarks can be heard at the 6:50 mark of this video on the Panthers’ website, but even with the context, it still doesn’t make sense.

For a player who has been in the NFL since 2011, it is baffling that Newton would be so caught off-guard by a question like that from a female reporter.

Based on the feedback his comments have gotten, we’ll have to see if he offers an apology in the coming days.

After all, this isn’t the first time he’s made a comment like this to a female reporter. Back in 2012, he called a reporter “sweetheart,” as you can see toward the end of the below video:
