Clemson falls in upset fashion to NC State, Playoff hopes likely dead

Clemson entered Saturday afternoon’s game at NC State ranked No. 9 in the country, but with a loss already on its resume.

That’s because the Tigers lost in Charlotte to now-No. 2 Georgia to start the 2021 campaign. The Tigers’ struggles offensively in that game proved to be no fluke, as they once again struggled on that side of the ball against the Wolfpack.

Tied 14-14 late in the fourth quarter, NC State drove into field goal range, only to watch as the last-second kick missed, sending the game to overtime.

In double overtime, the Wolfpack ended up winning 27-21, stopping Clemson on this fourth-down play:

It was Clemson’s first loss to an unranked team since 2017. It was also NC State’s first win against a top-10 team since 20212.

NC State stormed the field after the big win. Now, Clemson’s Playoff hopes seem to be dead.
