Strong spent seven seasons on the Florida staff as defensive coordinator. Strong became one of the most respected defensive minds in college football while coaching the Gator defense into one of the top in the country as Florida won two national championships. During his tenure in Gainesville, Strong coached 13 All-Americans. He was originally hired as the defensive coordinator under former head coach Ron Zook, and spent one game as interim head coach after Zook was fired during the 2004 season. Strong led the ’04 Gators to a loss in that year’s Peach Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes, but was retained as defensive coordinator by Urban Meyer.
