Archie Miller falls for joke post about SEC’s record in conference play, cites stat in press conference
Archie Miller sat down for a press conference on Monday and learned not to so quick to cite everything he sees posted on social media.
Miller’s Rhode Island Rams have dropped 2 games in a row and are fighting to stay in the mix in the tough Atlantic 10 conference. Miller mentioned how hard it is to win in any league, and referenced a satirical post on social media about the SEC’s record, missing out on the intended humor.
A user named Jacob Pickle made a post referencing the fact that “the SEC is 54-54 since January 4th.” Pickle jokingly declared that ESPN was then showing an “SEC bias” for teams who can’t even get above .500. Of course, Jan. 4 is when conference play started, so in every game, 1 team loses and 1 team wins. It would be impossible for a conference to be anything other than .500 in games against itself.
The satire was clearly lost on Miller.
“I heard somebody say the other day the SEC is the best league in the country, but in all games, they’re like 54-54,” explained Miller. “Somebody said that, I don’t know if that’s even accurate, but like, do you know how hard it is to win in every league?”
Miller learned the hard way that you can’t take everything you see on social media at face value. Perhaps running that “fact” by someone else before using it in a press conference would have been helpful in this situation.
On the court, Miller has done an admirable job of turning the Rhode Island program around. In Miller’s first season, 2022-23, the Rams ended with a 9-22 record. Last season, the Rams improved to 12-20. Through just 20 games of the 2024-25 season, Miller has already surpassed his previous season-high win total with the Rams sitting at 14-6.
