Jim Phillips released a statement on Florida State’s exclusion from the College Football Playoff on Sunday afternoon.

FSU became the first-ever undefeated Power 5 champion to not make the College Football Playoff. The Noles lost out to three other Power 5, undefeated conference champs as well as a 12-1 Alabama team who won the SEC.

Phillips said the decision by the committee “calls into question” the entire selection process.

Here’s Phillips’ full statement:

“It’s unfathomable that Florida State, an undefeated Power Five conference champion, was left out of the College Football Playoff. Their exclusion calls into question the selection process and whether the committee’s own guidelines were followed, including the significant importance of being an undefeated Power Five champion.

“My heart breaks for the talented FSU student-athletes and coaches and their passionate and loyal fans. Florida State deserved better. College Football deserved better.”

Florida State was trying to make the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2014. With this result, that drought will continue into next season as the Playoff expands to 12 teams.

Instead, FSU will represent the ACC at the Orange Bowl this season.
