The Eagles posted a 22-26 record in four seasons under Hafley. The team achieved bowl eligibility three times but missed two of those games due to COVID-19 issues. Boston College capped a 7-6 season with a win over SMU in the Fenway Bowl on Dec. 28.

Thamel shares via a source that Hafley sought to get away from dealing with NIL, the transfer portal and other non-coaching responsibilities in college.
“He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football,” a source told ESPN. “College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore.”

Boston College players will have 30 days to enter the NCAA transfer portal upon Hafley’s departure. The Eagles have signed 12 high school prospects and 10 transfers in their 2024 recruiting class. Three-star LB Omar Thornton committed last week ahead of February’s National Signing Day.
Hafley, 44, has been in coaching since 2001, landing assistant positions in college and the NFL. Boston College was his first head coaching job.
