Cam Skattebo makes strong case for Heisman candidacy: ‘I’m the best running back in the country’

Cam Skattebo stole the show in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday, taking 16 carries for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns as Arizona State pounded Iowa State 45-19 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, punching their ticket to the College Football Playoff in the process.
Skattebo did much of his damage in the first half, breaking off several long runs and scoring both of his TDs in the opening two frames. His 3-yard run helped the Sun Devils take a 17-10 lead early in the second quarter, an advantage that grew to 24-10 on a 2-yard scoring carry.
With Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty likely leading the Heisman Trophy race, has Skattebo down enough to punch his own ticket to Dec. 14’s ceremony in New York?
“I’ve been disrespected my whole life. I’ve always been the underdog. And nobody respects the fact that I’m the best running back in the country. And I’m gonna stand on that. And if people wanna disrespect that, I’m gonna keep going. And I’m gonna keep proving people wrong. … No matter whether I win the Heisman or lose the Heisman, I should still be in that situation.”
“I mean, I don’t know what else you can do to put your name in the race,” Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham added. “And obviously there are two other guys that are really, really high on that list, and I don’t know if he should ever surpass those guys. But should he be on that list? Should he have the opportunity to go there? Yes.”
