The Michigan football program is under an NCAA investigation, according to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach.

The investigation centers on “relatively minor infractions”, yet the program will receive a Notice of Allegations by Friday which will expand on the details.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports that Michigan’s violations “include alleged impermissible contact with recruits during the NCAA-mandated dead periods as well as the use of a defensive analyst for on-field coaching activities”. Questions are being raised around how Harbaugh responded to the investigation “(are) also being examined,” per Rittenberg, who also reports that Harbaugh could face a “multigame suspension” in 2023.

This comes in the wake of speculation that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh would depart the program for the NFL. However, the 59-year-old recently issued a statement debunking the rumors and saying that he expects to be at the helm for the Wolverines next season.

Michigan’s season came to a close with a 13-1 record after falling to TCU 51-45 in an instant classic College Football Playoff semifinal contest. It marked the second consecutive season Michigan reached the CFP yet failed to advance to the national title game. Michigan fell to eventual national champion Georgia in last season’s Orange Bowl semifinal game.

Harbaugh returned to the collegiate ranks at Michigan after spending 2011-14 as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh guided the storied franchise to an NFC title in 2012. He also served as a college head coach at San Diego (2004-06), and Stanford (2007-10).
