Scott Frost is nearing a return to the college coaching ranks.

After an unsuccessful stint leading the Nebraska program, Frost is closing in on an agreement with UCF to return to the school as its next head coach, according to a report from The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel. Frost is currently serving as a coaching consultant with the Los Angeles Rams.

Football Scoop’s John Brice reported on Friday that UCF’s search had focused on 2 candidates — Frost and UNLV’s Barry Odom. The school is looking to replace Gus Malzahn, who left to take an assistant position with Florida State after a 4-8 season.

Frost coached the Knights from 2016-17 and authored one of the greatest turnarounds in college football history.

UCF went 0-12 in 2015. It was outscored by 24 points a game.

Frost won 6 games in his first year and took the Knights to a bowl game. In 2017, UCF went 13-0 while winning the AAC championship and beating Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

Following that season, Frost left UCF to return to his alma mater. As a former national championship-winning quarterback with the Huskers in the 90s, his return was hailed as a turning point for a Nebraska program that had fallen on hard times. Frost was viewed by many as the man to return Nebraska to its former glory.

What followed was nothing but disappointment. He opened his first year with the Huskers 0-6 and finished with a 16-31 record across 5 years. Nebraska struggled almost comically in 1-score games and posted 4 consecutive losing records under Frost. He was fired 3 games into the 2022 season.

Frost sat out the 2023 season entirely before landing with the Rams.

The UCF program Frost will inherit in his second stint will need another rebuild. The Knight won 9 games in each of Malzahn’s first 2 seasons, but they’ve gone just 5-13 in conference games since joining the Big 12.
