Every 1,000-Yard Rusher in Texas Football History

Did anybody actually think Texas wouldn’t produce a 1,000-yard rusher in 2024 — the Longhorns’ debut season in the SEC?

This is Texas, which has produced 27 1,000-yard seasons and had 2 running backs join the fraternity of Heisman Trophy winners: Earl Campbell in 1977 and Ricky Williams in 1998.

It was no surprise, then, that Quintrevion “Tre” Wisner cracked the 1,000-yard mark in 2024, a magical season in which the Longhorns reached the SEC Championship Game and made the College Football Playoff for the first time.

Here’s the complete history of Texas’ 1,000-yard rushers.

Texas’ 1,000-Yard Rushers

The SEC doesn’t retroactively include stats from teams and players who played in other conferences. If it did, Longhorns Ricky Williams and D’Onta Foreman would rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, on the SEC’s single-season list, entering the 2025 season.

Hence, Tre Wisner became the first Longhorn to rush for 1,000 yards as an SEC player. No doubt, more will follow. Here’s the complete list of every Longhorn who rushed for 1,000 yard in a season (* indicates the player was not in the SEC at the time).

Texas’ Single-Season Rushing Record Progression

Chris Gilbert is the first Texas Longhorn to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, thus setting the program record in 1966. He broke his own mark 2 years later when he topped 1,000 yards for the third time in his career. Here’s a look at Texas’ single-season record-holders since (bold indicates the year the rushing record was broken; * indicates the player was not in the SEC at the time):
