Texas Football History

The Texas Longhorns are one of the biggest names in the entire college football universe. Texas claims 4 national titles throughout its storied history — 1963, 1969, 1970 and 2005.
The Longhorns have produced 2 Heisman Trophy winners over the years — Earl Campbell in 1977 and Ricky Williams in 1998. Vince Young is also one of the best college football players of the 2000s, and it seems strange that the man who led Texas to the 2005 national title didn’t win a Heisman. (He finished second to USC’s Reggie Bush in 2005.)
The Longhorns have won 33 conference titles, but only 4 of those came in the Big 12. Most of the conference championships came in the Southwest Conference, which the Longhorns called home from 1915-1995.
Texas is a member of the SEC as of 2024. Coming off a College Football Playoff appearance following the 2023 season, we’ll see what the new conference has in store for coach Steve Sarkisian and company.
