Florida’s offense left a lot to be desired, to put things mildly, in Thursday night’s Orange and Blue Game, which ended with a score of 10-7.

Big Ten transfers Graham Mertz (18-of-29 passing, 244 yards, TD) and Jack Miller (10-of-20, 144 yards) played most of the game. Max Brown, a second-year QB who is also an outfielder for the UF baseball team, threw just 4 passes.

The spring game prompted many questions and concerns regarding Florida’s QB room for the 2023 season. Billy Napier’s stated preference is to have 4 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

Napier confirmed in his postgame press conference that he still wants to add another scholarship quarterback to the QB room.

Q: You mentioned the transfer portal before. You mentioned going to have four scholarship quarterbacks. You don’t have that right now. Will you be in the market for a quarterback when the portal opens up?

Napier: Yeah, I think that process is underway to some degree. I think we’ll know more pretty soon. That’s what I would say in that regard. Yes, we anticipate adding a player to our team at that position.

The next transfer portal window for undergraduate entry opens for 15 days, beginning Saturday. With depth charts getting updated as teams wrap up spring practice, there are sure to be many quarterbacks entering the portal and looking for opportunities.

Florida also has a unique situation with Austin Simmons, a recent quarterback commitment. Simmons is currently a 4-star Class of 2025 prospect but finished his high school core classes years early as a home-school student and has already earned college credits dual-enrolling with 2 remaining years of high school sports eligibility.

We’ll see what the Gators do to add a fourth quarterback between now and August.
