College football head coach, former Florida assistant, passes away at 66
College football coach Buddy Teevens has tragically passed away. Teevens’ alma mater Dartmouth, where he was head coach for 22 years, shared the news on Tuesday evening.
Teevens died of injuries sustained in a bicycle accident that occurred in March.
“Our family is heartbroken to inform you that our beloved ‘coach’ has peacefully passed away surrounded by family. Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained proved too challenging for even him to overcome,” the Teevens family said in a statement released by Dartmouth. “Throughout this journey, we consistently relayed the thoughts, memories, and love sent his way. Your kindness and letters of encouragement did not go unnoticed and were greatly appreciated by both Buddy and our family.”
Teevens played quarterback at Dartmouth from 1975-to-1978. He got into coaching after graduating, getting his start at DePauw in 1979 as the team’s running backs coach.
Teevens’ first head coaching job was with Maine from 1985-to-1986. He returned to his alma mater as head coach in 1987. Teevens remained the Dartmouth head coach through 1991 before taking the Tulane job.
Following his Tulane tenure and 2 seasons as an Illinois assistant, Teevens joined Steve Spurrier’s Florida staff in 1999. Teevens served a variety of roles, coaching Gators running backs, quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and special teams during his 3 seasons under Spurrier. He held the title of assistant offensive coordinator in 2001, Spurrier’s final season as UF head coach.
Teevens took the head coaching job at Stanford for the 2002 season. After 3 seasons with the Cardinal, Teevens returned to his alma mater for his second tenure as Dartmouth’s head coach.
Dartmouth won 5 Ivy League titles (1990, ’91, 2015, ’19 and ’21) under Teevens. He had a 117–101–2 record as Dartmouth’s head coach.
In March, Teevens was riding his bike in St. Augustine, Florida when he was struck by a pickup truck. He was 66, and would have turned 67 on Oct. 1.
We are saddened to share the passing of legendary Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach Buddy Teevens ’79. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.
