The Florida Gators have been in the news a lot recently, as Netflix recently released the first part of a four-part documentary called “Swamp Kings.” Swamp Kings takes a look at the Florida Gators football program during the later part of the 2000s.

Two members of the Florida football team during this time frame were Tim Tebow and Cam Newton. Both of those players won the Heisman and a national championship during their collegiate careers. However, Newton didn’t find success until after he left Gainesville.

Dan Mullen, who was the offensive coordinator at Florida from 2005-08 (also head coach from 2018-2021),  made an appearance on the “Matt Barrie Show” and talked about the dynamic of that team during that era.

“Tim’s sophomore year, he wins the Heisman trophy and Cam is a true freshman,” Mullen said. “You’re looking at the situation and thinking, this Cam is really talented. I can’t wait to get him on the field, still young and still learning. Urban comes into the room after spring practice thinking it’s going to be a quick conversation says, ‘Who is the best quarterback.'”

While Mullen thought Newton was the most talented quarterback in the room, Meyer was not going to not start Tebow.

“You better get the National Guard in front of your house if you are going to play Cam Newton over Tim Tebow, I’m going to make sure everybody knows where you live,” Meyer told Mullen.

It worked out for both players involved and is another interesting story in the history of Florida football.
