The best play a quarterback made at Florida’s first practice was a check down according to coach Dan Mullen.

“The best play today I saw was probably [Kyle] Trask,” Mullen said in his post-practice press conference. “They doubled an out cut, and he checked it down for six yards. That’s the best play we saw.”

Mullen explained why a simple check down impressed him more than one of the quarterbacks showing off their arm by launching a deep ball into coverage.

“They were kind of like shocked,” Mullen said. “‘Didn’t you see that bomb I threw into double coverage and we scored a touchdown?’ No. I said, ‘That’s not the best play.'”

Trask famously impressed the former coaching staff – particularly Jim McElwain and Doug Nussmeier – with his mechanics and arm-strength despite being the second-string quarterback at his own high school.

If Trask shows Mullen he’s the best decision-maker of Florida’s three quarterbacks, he could be the Week 1 starter. Another thing Trask has going for him is that at 6-5, 239 pounds, he has the frame Mullen looks for in his quarterbacks.

“One of the things that I do like that Kyle does is he’s very conscious about trying to do what we ask him to do,” Mullen said. “He’s got great size within the pocket. There’s a benefit to size at the quarterback position; a lot of people like it because it’s just easier to see with things. He does a great job of staying tall in the pocket and seeing what’s going on to be able to distribute the ball.”
