In many ways, the Florida football program had a drastic change 25 years ago. But one of those was the nickname of the Gators’ stadium.

On Saturday, Florida will honor the 25th anniversary of Steve Spurrier calling Ben Hill Griffin Stadium “The Swamp.” The honor will be during the Gators’ home opener against Northern Colorado, which is set for 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.

“The ‘Swamp’ is a place where only Gators get out alive,” Spurrier told then-Gainesville Sun columnist Mike Bianchi in 1992. “We feel comfortable there, but we hope our opponents feel tentative. A swamp is hot and sticky and can be dangerous. We feel this is an appropriate nickname for our stadium.”

Cups and T-shirts will be among the items fans can purchase to honor the anniversary.

On the cup, text reads, “25 years ago, the Head Ball Coach called it the Swamp and we’ve been chomping ever since.”

The Gators have played well in the stadium over the years.

Spurrier’s teams went 68-5 at home during his 12 seasons. Jim McElwain is 11-1 at home after going unbeaten at home last year.
