Florida has announced that seven players, including WR Antonio Callaway, have been suspended for the season opener against Michigan. The school did not state why the players are being suspended. Coach Jim McElwain has an already scheduled press conference for Monday at 12:15 p.m.

LB James Houston, OL Kadeem Telfort, DE Keivonnis Davis, WR Antonio Callaway, DL Jordan Smith, DL Richerd Desir-Jones, and LB Ventrell Miller were all announced as suspended Sunday afternoon.

“We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing,” McElwain said in a statement. “Action has been taken – they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward.”

Callaway, entering his junior season, has been Florida’s top playmaker at wide receiver the past two seasons. Last season, he led the team in receptions (54) and receiving yards (721), and also was a co-leader in receiving touchdowns (3).

The former 3-star recruit from Miami’s Booker T. Washington has had multiple off-the-field issues during his time at UF. Callaway missed last spring while he was suspended and being investigated by the school after a fellow student’s sexual assault claim. He was found to be not responsible by the school and returned to the team in August.

In May, Callaway received a citation for marijuana possession. Despite the citation, coach Jim McElwain had said at media day that all players were on track to play against Michigan. In June, Callaway was offered a plea deal on the citation.

Davis, the next biggest contributor of the bunch, appeared in all 13 games and started five last season.
