Former Florida player calls on next head coach to keep popular assistant
There’s going to be plenty of change happening in Gainesville in the near future. Florida fired head coach Dan Mullen on Sunday, and it’s unclear who will lead the Gators next.
Whenever Florida decides on a new head coach, there’s a good chance he’ll make some changes to the staff. However, it appears there are some former and current Gators players who are hoping that one current assistant can keep his job.
Nick Savage has been Florida’s director of football strength and conditioning since December 2017. He was hired a month after Mullen became the Gators’ head coach. Before that, Savage worked under Mullen at Mississippi State from 2014-17.
Now, Savage’s future may be in question. But former Florida offensive lineman Brett Heggie believes Savage should keep his job on Florida’s staff:
Change happens often in college football. However, something needs to be done to keep savage and his staff in Gainesville. They are the best in the business. #KeepSavage

Gervon Dexter, who is currently a sophomore defensive lineman for the Gators, was also quick to endorse Savage on Twitter:

Savage was a strength intern at Bowling Green (2013) and Ohio State (2013-14), then served as a graduate assistant strength coach at Toledo in 2014. He started his time at Mississippi State as the assistant strength coach, before being promoted to head strength coach in 2016.
Per Savage’s bio on Florida’s site, he’s worked with almost 40 players who have been picked in the NFL Draft since 2013.
