Joel Klatt talks up Anthony Richardson's NFL potential
Joel Klatt is a big believer in former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.
Klatt ranked Richardson No. 3 on his quarterback big board for the NFL Draft behind Bryce Young and CJ Stroud. However, Klatt said there’s a path for Richardson to become one of the best quarterbacks in the entire league.
He compared him to a Rubik’s cube when talking about his untapped potential.
“If you can complete Anthony Richardson, he’s got the traits that would make him one of the best players in the entire league,” Klatt said. “Because of his size, his speed, his arm strength, this guy is the total package. He would be the best player on the field if you could figure it out. If you could unlock him. Is it gonna take some time? Probably. There’s a lot of things that need to go right.”
Here’s video of Klatt’s full analysis:

Klatt also said he could be a better version of Josh Allen is he’s able to improve on some of his weaknesses.
Richardson is currently projected to be a 1st round pick in the 2023 NFL. In Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock, he projected the Seattle Seahawks to trade up to No. 9 and select Richardson.
The NFL Scouting combine is ongoing this week in Indianapolis. The NFL Draft will be held from April 27-29.
This reminds me of a saying beginning with “if a frog had wings.”
I wish him well but he’s not ready to read NFL defenses. As far as physical traits, they said the same things about Vince Young and Demarcus Russell. Can SDS maybe write some articles about current Gator football, or how about the Gator baseball team, or the basketball team that just beat Mike White “AGAIN”. I didn’t see any articles about that.
SDS, ESPN, 247Sports, On3, USAToday, Sports Illustrated, I can go on, but the number of sports media outlets that are all-in on promoting this narrative of Anthony Richardson as a top NFL QB prospect in 2023 is exhaustive.
Tailwhip, you mentioned both Vince Young and Jamarcus Russell for comparison. At least they had success at the college level that has eluded AR, so far.
This media narrative is setting up one foolish NFL franchise for a major failure should they draft him first and he fails, or the whole league for the dreaded accusation of discrimination and social injustice, if nobody drafts him first. Either way, the media gets another juicy story with which they get to skewer the NFL.
The ironic twist here is that we may get to witness the NFL debut of both Anthony Richardson and Kyle Trask in 2023. Can you imagine how that comparison might play out?
tailwhip…You posted it before me. My thinking was comparing him to Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell. But one big difference between Richardson and the other two(2) is that Vince Young won a National Championship at Texas & JaMarcus Russell had a great career at LSU. AR15 did not have a great career at Florida. AR15 has the words NFL-Bust written all over him. Oh yes, his “Self-Confidence” issues also. Absolutely no chance in the NFL.
There is one conclusion that one can come to based on all the media types opinions of Richardson. Just go find the best athlete out there. These NFL QB coaches will turn them into a legendary All Pro in a year or so. Easy peasy.
He obviously has all the physical traits …and then some. And those on message boards that keep bringing up his mechanics, or his inability to go through progressions or make the right “reads” …are either really uneducated about the position or have an axe to grind. Really dumb assessments. The biggest question marks have always been his leadership and his willingness to put everything on the line to win. He is very tender, emotionally. He’ll be fine with everything else.
Just no.
Think you missed the mark on that one, buddy.
Lots of people who do this all day, everyday, for a living would disagree with you.
Upstate, you are quite a learned observer and I really enjoy reading your comments when you post. I just think that on this one you missed the actual proximal cause to his woes at QB. IMO, you got the ballpark correct in terms of emotional profile, a global term, but it’s more subtle than that.
Nobody thought Mahomes and Allen would become top 5 qbs in the league! Thats what NFL franchsie are chasing with Richardson.
Lots of people thought Mahomes would. Buffalo was correct about Allen. Richardson is a reach and quite a gamble. It could pay off big or set a bad franchise back even further. He’s not close to being ready to play in the nfl.
LSU…I’m with you 500% on Richardson. Only his running ability impressed anyone.
Richardson….”best interview at the combine”
“Anthony Richardson is crushing it”
“Potential #1 overall pick”
Been reading a lot of good things about this Anthony Richardson. Somehow I missed hearing all this good stuff while he was in college but I wish we would find someone like him to play for us.
Imagine that
We all missed that, somehow.
Then, the center snaps the ball, the pass rushers come and his pass sails twelve feet over the head of a wide open receiver, twelve yards downfield.
