Florida cornerback Jalen “Teez” Tabor is widely regarded as a first-round talent, but that reputation may have taken a hit with a shaky performance at the combine on Monday.

At the 40-yard dash, Tabor registered a less-than-impressive 4.63 seconds, the third-slowest time among all defensive backs. His second attempt, a plodding 4.68, proved that the first wasn’t a fluke.

While these drills are well removed from the on-field action of football, the 40-yard dash is particularly important for defensive backs. As a potential number-one corner, Tabor plays one of the few positions that will ever need to actually run that distance in a straight line.

His bench press was underwhelming as well, as the former Gator was only able to get nine reps of 225 pounds, the second fewest of the group.

Though few doubt his mental talent, ball skills, and decision-making, it appears that the physical side of the NFL prospect is a bit lacking so far.

NFL.com’s scouting profile of Tabor says that “With Vernon (Hargreaves) there last year he played with a lot more confidence. I don’t think he’s a lockdown cornerback. He’s a good football player and can cover in our league, but he’s also going to be a pain in the ass for whoever takes him.”

In fairness to Tabor, the scouting combine can only do so much to predict a player’s success. There have been plenty of shorts-wearing All-Stars like Vernon Gholston who have shot up draft boards after strong Combine performances, only to have their GMs learn later that they can’t cut it when the pads come on.

In fact, former Gator, and now Browns cornerback Joe Haden underwhelmed at the Combine as well. Known for his speediness in college, Haden clocked in at an underwhelming 4.57 seconds in the 40. That didn’t stop the Browns from taking him with the seventh pick, and it also didn’t stop him from making two Pro Bowls and one Second-Team All-Pro selection.
