Minutes after the Gators’ fourth-quarter comeback led by true freshman quarterback Treon Harris, Gator Nation erupted as the Gators had defeated Tennessee for the tenth straight game and presumably had a brand new starting quarterback.

Head coach Will Muschamp reminded everyone in his post-game press conference to not get ahead of themselves in regard to the Florida quarterback situation.

“We needed to change things up,” Muschamp said with Maria Taylor of SEC Network. “It wasn’t all on Jeff. We had some protection issues. We had to work Treon in and he did a fantastic job.

“We’ll decide that in the coming week,” Muschamp added about if Harris would remain the team’s starter.

Muschamp even hinted at the possibility of both Harris and Jeff Driskel seeing the field against LSU next weekend.

“If we need to play two quarterbacks moving forward, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Driskel was dismal all game, completing just 12-of-23 passes for 59 yards and three interceptions. With the exception of some decent runs out of some zone read plays, Driskel was largely ineffective on offense. The Gators were going nowhere and Muschamp recognized his team needed a spark.

“We got a little bit of an emotional charge a little bit and we got some things on track. I’m real proud of our guys,” Muschamp added.

There’s no question Harris did just that for the Gators. Once the true freshman came into the game, Florida’s offense seemed to have an extra pep in their step. Harris promptly led Florida on a short scoring drive following a fumble forced and recovered by defensive back Jalen Tabor. On the next drive, he led the Gators down the field for a go-ahead field goal, which eventually was the game-winning score as well.

He finished the game with just 17 passing yards and 24 rushing yards, but more important the Gators were able to move the ball on offense. Running back Matt Jones also benefited from the quarterback change. After Harris entered the game, Jones ran for 46 yards and caught a pass for 12 yards. He scored the lone touchdown for the Gators at the end of Harris’ first drive.

“[Treon] was a better runner when he’d run the zone read,” Jone said after the game. “The defense had to respect Treon’s legs so that definitely opened some things up for me.”

Regardless of what Muschamp decides at quarterback, there’s life again in the Florida fan base thanks to a true freshman quarterback.
