The Georgia Bulldogs took the field for their spring game on Saturday afternoon in front of a massive crowd of more than 80,000 people.

Fans wanted to see top recruit Justin Fields, as well as returning starting QB Jake Fromm, and both provided some highlights.

Other than that, the Bulldogs looked like a team ready to make another run at an SEC title, especially on defense. There’s still plenty of work left to do, but Saturday’s scrimmage was a great showcase of what the Dawgs have been working on this spring.

Here are just a few takeaways from Saturday’s action in Athens:

1. Jake Fromm’s deep balls look great

It was an up-and-down day for Fromm, who threw two interceptions and didn’t lead a touchdown drive through the first three quarters of play, but he still made some nice throws.

He had two deep passes that probably should have been touchdowns, but one was dropped and the other was stripped away from Riley Ridley in the end zone. Fromm has work to do to hold off freshman Justin Fields, but he showed plenty of arm strength on Saturday.

He finally connected on a deep pass late in the game, finding Ridley for a 57-yard touchdown, but that was after ESPN cut away from the game.

Now it’s going to be up to the Bulldogs to find some receivers who can catch those passes.

2. Justin Fields is going to keep the pressure on Fromm

Saturday was also a mixed bag for Fields, who did some nice things but also made some mistakes. The biggest thing Fields needs to work on is touch, as he looked like Jacob Eason firing fastballs at his receivers no matter the distance.

Otherwise, Fields made some smart decisions to lead the second-team offense, throwing his first touchdown pass and showing why he was one of the top recruits in the nation this year.

Again, Fromm will likely be the starter in Week 1, but Fields will be ready to take over if Fromm gets hurt or struggles during the regular season.

3. The defensive backs look strong

The secondary struggled at times last year and the Dawgs lost three starters from the unit this offseason. Then, this spring, talented freshman Divaad Wilson tore his ACL, thinning the ranks even more.

Saturday, the secondary for the first-team defense held up well against Fromm and the first-team offense. S Richard LeCounte III had an interception, and the other defensive backs played well.

That was also helped by a strong pass rush and a pick-six by Deandre Baker, but it was an encouraging sign that Smart’s secondary held up against a talented offense.

4. The running backs need to step up

This was supposed to be a big day for Brian Herrien and Elijah Holyfield, especially since likely starter D’Andre Swift was held out.

Both backs looked good catching passes, but they didn’t get much going on the ground.

It’s still early, and there will be plenty of time for them to get more work before the start of the season, but the Bulldogs were probably looking for more from the two running backs on Saturday.

5. Hot Rod could win the Groza Award

Rodrigo Blankenship was clutch in the Rose Bowl and National Championship Game, and he earned the love of the Georgia fans.

Saturday, he did nothing to make Bulldog supporters like him less, knocking home a pair of field goals.

It wouldn’t be too surprising to see him emerge as one of the best kickers in the country this year if all goes well.
