Florida and Georgia won’t meet again on the football field until Nov. 2. Gators and Bulldogs fans probably wish the teams could face off right now.

On the recruiting trail, message boards and social media, the Cocktail Party rivalry is as heated as ever. On Saturday, UGA coach Kirby Smart tweeted an announcement welcoming Charlton Warren as Georgia’s new defensive backs coach. Warren spent the 2018 season coaching cornerbacks at Florida.

The timing of the announcement appears to have been carefully planned. Benjamin School (North Palm Beach, Fla.) CB Kaiir Elam was in Athens visiting UGA when the announcement was made. Only seven days earlier Warren had been recruiting Elam to UF during an official visit to Florida.

Rated the No. 7 cornerback, No. 8 Florida product and No. 49 prospect overall nationally in the 2019 recruiting class, Elam will be a big get for either the Gators or Dawgs. Florida had been considered the favorite to land Elam, the nephew of former Gators All-American DB Matt Elam, but Georgia has long been seen as a contender. Now the position coach who spent over a year pitching Elam to UF is officially on the Georgia staff.

Some recruiting experts are thinking this has turned the tide in UGA’s favor. On 247Sports, five new Crystal Balls were submitted by experts this weekend. Four are predicting Elam will sign to Georgia while one is for “undecided.” UF still leads in the Crystal Ball predictions (67 percent), but those predictions were all made prior to the Warren move.
