Boo Corrigan, chair of the College Football Playoff committee, explained the reasoning for Ohio State holding onto the No. 1 spot in the latest CFP rankings reveal. That was a surprise for some considering how Georgia and the Buckeyes both fared over the weekend.

For Ohio State, the Buckeyes hit the road and trailed Rutgers heading into halftime before a second-half surge put the game away. Meanwhile, Georgia beat a top-15 team in Missouri with a 9-point win at home.

During Tuesday’s media teleconference, Corrigan was adamant the discussion on the Bulldogs and Buckeyes happened multiple times throughout the meeting. As a group, he says the committee liked Ohio State’s win over a top-20 defense in Rutgers.

“Well, I can assure you, we talked about it early, we talked about it in the middle and we talked about it late to make sure that we had it, as a committee,” said Corrigan. “The win over Rutgers, a top-20 defense, put up 28 points, another 7 on a pick-6, TreVeyon Henderson being back for his second game, the win over Penn State, the win over Notre Dame, the win at Wisconsin, seven wins over teams with winning records really drove the day.”

Corrigan was later pressed about saying Ohio State’s win over Rutgers provided “resume enhancement” during ESPN’s reveal show. He explained winning “is really important” and reiterated it was a road game for Ohio State against a top-20 defense.

“Again, winning is really important, so let’s not lose sight of that. Also, Rutgers with the top-20 defense wins on the road are hard to come by,” Corrigan explained. “As you’re looking at it, I don’t know that it was something necessarily that everyone looked at and bumped them up, but they continued to move on, they continue to play well. Really physical team. TreVeyon Henderson, as I said before, being back, going for over 100 yards the last two games helps them overall as a team, with their top-5 defense, as well.”

We’ll see if that order holds up down the stretch if Ohio State and Georgia finish the regular season undefeated. The Buckeyes must face Michigan State, Minnesota and Michigan to end the regular while the Bulldogs get Ole Miss, Tennessee and Georgia Tech.
