After it was reported that Jermaine Johnson had entered the NCAA transfer portal, the Georgia linebacker made it official on Tuesday. He issued a statement on Twitter confirming that he will be using his final year of eligibility at a new school.

Johnson began his college career at Independence Community College before transferring to Georgia ahead of the 2019 season. He played in all 14 of the Bulldogs’ games last year, compiling 20 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks and a forced fumble. This season, he had 16 tackles and four sacks in seven games.

A 6-foot-5, 240-pound linebacker from Eden Prairie, Minn., Johnson spent two seasons at Independence CC. He was a 4-star JUCO recruit and the No. 1-ranked JUCO player in the country (per the 247Sports Composite rankings) when he chose Georgia on Aug. 2, 2018.

Johnson thanked the Bulldogs’ coaches, players and fans in his heartfelt announcement:

Johnson was a solid contributor for the Bulldogs the past two seasons, and now they’ll be losing some depth in their linebacker corps for the 2021 season. However, perhaps that will give another Georgia player an opportunity to step up and fill that role.
