Georgia struggled mightily at the quarterback position against Florida in Jacksonville on Saturday, hampered by a slow performance from Stetson Bennett IV and D’Wan Mathis. Combined, the 2 managed just 112 yards on 9-of-19 passing while throwing 3 interceptions, a sharp contrast to a 474-yard passing day from Gators quarterback Kyle Trask.

For the year, Bennett has completed 55.6 percent of his passes—the lowest among regular starters in the SEC—a number that Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart will be working all week with his quarterbacks, whether it’s Bennett, Mathis or JT Daniels, to improve as the team travels to Missouri on Saturday.

“It’s not that we protect the quarterback better, it’s accuracy in terms of completion percentage, getting open receivers,” Smart said during his media availability on Monday. “We always say ‘you have to make your layups’ and that’s the most disappointing thing about the last couple games is the accuracy and the ability to hit the open guys and defensively, not giving gifts away.”

Smart discussed the missed chances Bennett had during Saturday’s game, pointing out overthrown passes and other miscues that damaged the Bulldogs’ chances at extending their winning streak against the Gators to 4 games.

“You have to improve, number one, when a guy gets the chance to catch a ball, catch it, but when you have him open you can’t overthrow him,” he said. “A lot of that can be held to a good run game, which we have shown the ability at times to run the ball on some hard boxes. Missouri gives you hard boxes almost every single snap. It’s one of those challenges that we have to improve on.”
