Five-star defensive tackle Rashan Gary (Paramus, N.J.) is the most coveted prospect in the country.

Gary is ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the 2016 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, and several SEC schools are in a dogfight for his signature.

But if we know one thing about recruiting, it’s that Mom usually wins. Dad and son may love a school, but if Mom isn’t happy with the idea of her baby moving away or has a concern about a program, that’s quite often the overriding decision. And Gary’s mom has one major concern with Georgia’s program, she told the Atlantic Journal Constitution.

“I know they run a 3-4 defense, and I don’t know how good that would be for my son,” Jennifer Coney told the AJC.

“In that three-person line, their job is to hold the offensive line so the linebackers can come in to make the tackle. Well, how is Rashan supposed to shine in a 3-4? A 4-3 defense is what I prefer. It’s OK for him to play in a 3-4, only if they rotate in a 4-3. I just don’t see how playing in a 3-4 defense would benefit him.”

Mom knows her football, but here’s the problem…

Of the five SEC programs Gary is reportedly looking at — Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss, only LSU and Ole Miss have a base defense of four down linemen. Alabama, Georgia and now Auburn run more 3-4 than 4-3. Now, LSU will implement some 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, who came from Alabama. The Rebels run a 4-2-5 base defense, which features four down linemen.

Of course, there’s plenty of time for each of the head coaches and defensive coordinators to show Gary’s mother that her son will shine in either system.

Gary’s mother, however, loves Athens.

“I really like Athens,” she told the AJC. “Rashan was on campus and I went around the city on my own, and it’s such a nice town. I like the facilities and I really like the entire coaching staff. (Defensive coordinator Jeremy) Pruitt, (defensive line coach Tracy) Rocker and coach Mark Richt are really good men.”

Gary will be one of the most interesting and most followed storylines of the recruiting season. It’s easy to see how explosive he is in the following Vine.
