Former Georgia LB Roquan Smith is only one of two (QB Sam Darnold being the other) first-round picks to have not signed their rookie contracts.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Smith is hung up on contract language involving the NFL’s new helmet rule. Bears head coach Matt Nagy confirmed that’s a source of Smith’s holdout Saturday.

Basically, Smith and the Bears disagree on the financial protections should Smith violate the new use-of-helmet rule. The new helmet rule allows officials to eject a player who decides to initiate contact with his helmet. Per the report, the NFL’s executive VP of football operations Troy Vincent said of 40,000 plays in 2017, only three would have resulted in ejections.

Smith and his team are concerned that should he be suspended under the new rule, the Bears could void guarantees in his contract. That’s what Smith is seeking protection against.

The new rule applies to both offensive and defensive players, but Smith being a linebacker will be making a majority of the tackles.

One side will eventually give in, but who will it be?
