Curt Cignetti drops expletive in amazing shot at IU’s SOS critics

Curt Cignetti has just about heard it all this season. In spite of an 11-1 regular season, Indiana has its fair share of critics, mainly related to the strength of schedule played by the Hoosiers.
All season long, Indiana played just one team that finished in the top 25 of the AP Poll. That would be Ohio State, a road game for the Hoosiers that saw the Buckeyes put a dominant 2nd-half push in a 38-15 blowout.
In spite of that performance, Cignetti believes his squad is prepared to handle the elite teams in the country. Speaking on ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast Friday evening, Cignetti referenced some of his successes against teams he believes are top-25 opponents.
“What will a win do for us? I mean look, there’s a lot of skeptics, a lot of doubters,” said Cignetti. “Haven’t beat a top-25 team. Nebraska was 25th in the coaches poll, we beat their ass 56-7. You know, and I’ve never beat a top-25 team? Coastal Carolina, back when we were little James Madison moving up to the Sun Belt, they were 22nd to end the year, we beat them 44-7.”
“We don’t just beat top 25 teams, we beat the shit out of them,” Cignetti emphatically concluded.

Cignetti is correct that Nebraska, though unranked in the AP Poll, was 25th in the coaches poll ahead of their midseason meeting. However, that was after a 5-1 start for the Huskers with Matt Rhule’s squad falling off to a 6-6 finish to the regular season.
And it goes without saying, but comparing a win in the Sun Belt to a quality top-25 win in a power conference is not quite the same thing. That’s especially true considering how the Hoosiers looked outmatched vs. Ohio State.
Nevertheless, confidence will not be lacking on the IU sideline when the Hoosiers face Notre Dame. We’ll see if Cignetti’s group can stun the Fighting Irish when things kick off at 8 pm ET.
