Kentucky officially named the program’s new defensive coordinator on Friday as Mark Stoops has decided to promote Brad White to the position. The Wildcats had an opening at the spot after former coordinator Matt House left to become the linebackers coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

White will also continue to coach the team’s outside linebackers, which was his designated duty last season for Kentucky’s outstanding defense.

News of White’s promotion was first reported by Josh Edwards of 247Sports. White has served one year on the Kentucky staff, as outside linebackers coach, which again follows in the footsteps of House. House served one season in Lexington before being promoted to defensive coordinator by Stoops.

White came to Lexington from the NFL. During his first season with Kentucky, he helped develop Josh Allen into a first-round lock and put the outside linebacker in contention to become the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Last season, Allen was a unanimous first-team All-American and led the team in tackles and led the SEC in sacks (17.0), tackles for loss (21.5) and forced fumbles (5).

“I’m very confident in Coach White’s ability to lead the defense,” Stoops said via statement. “He did a tremendous job fundamentally developing our players last season. He has always given great support with ‘big-picture’ ideas on defense and I’m excited about what he will do to take us to another level.”

With White landing a promotion following House’s departure, the program has also added Ole Miss linebackers coach Jon Sumrall to complete Stoops’ staff.

Along with news of White’s promotion, Kentucky announced that Vince Marrow has added associate head coach duties.
