Kentucky scheduled some big nonconference games in the first 2 weeks of the 2022-23 campaign. John Calipari’s Wildcats have dropped big tests against Michigan State and Gonzaga.
UK was in Spokane, Washington Sunday night to face Gonzaga. The Bulldogs were in control from start to finish in an 88-72 victory. Kentucky got off to a slow start, trailing 41-25 at the half. The Wildcats matched the Zags’ 47 points in the second half but were unable to take the lead.
After the game, Kentucky F Jacob Toppin was asked about the team’s lack of fight. Per Kyle Tucker of The Athletic, Toppin said that some players “can’t step up” in a response sure to concern Big Blue Nation.
How could UK not have fight against a No. 2 team?
Toppin: “If you want the honest answer (long pause) … um … it’s a long season. I don’t want to speak for any guys, but in some moments, guys can’t step up.”

Toppin was 1 of 3 Kentucky in double-digit scoring, making 7-of-18 field goals 2-of-4 free throws for 16 points over 36 minutes. Oscar Tshiebwe led the Cats with 20 points and 15 rebounds over 28 minutes.
Calipari’s squad will look to bounce back Wednesday at home against North Florida.
