The Kentucky men’s basketball team’s first loss of the 2020-21 season came to an unlikely opponent.

On Sunday, the No. 10 Wildcats lost to Richmond, 76-64, at the Bluegrass Showcase at Rupp Arena in their second game of the season. The defeat came only four days after Kentucky’s season-opening 81-45 win over Morehead State.

The Wildcats shot 0-for-10 from 3-point range and committed 21 turnovers. It was a sloppy showing for a team that has eight freshmen on its roster, including four who were in the starting lineup. And that’s why Kentucky head coach John Calipari wants his players to use this game to improve for the future, which he discussed during the postgame radio show on the UK Sports Network.

“The turnovers were mostly walks and charges and guys being a little bit selfish,” Calipari said on the show. “Again, I want them to be aggressive. But they’ve got to figure out what worked in high school may not work here. The things I’m telling them about getting the ball by the man, you can’t mess with the ball against good players. I mean, good players are going to get up on you and tip balls and steal.

“These are all learning experiences. I knew this was going to be a tough game, I was hoping we’d play better. The first half, defensively, we did some good stuff.”

The Wildcats don’t have much time to prepare for their next opponent, and it’s a challenging one. Kentucky is set to play No. 6 Kansas in the State Farm Champions Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It could be another tough showing for the Wildcats, or they could bounce back with a huge non-conference win.
