Arik Gilbert’s wild offseason ride continues as the former five-star tight end prospect appears to be taking steps toward returning to LSU.

While it’s far too early to say Gilbert will continue his college career at LSU, the tight end is reportedly in Baton Rouge this week with the Tigers currently in spring practice.

This news comes via Mike Farrell of Rivals. Farrell did not add any additional information as to why Gilbert was in Baton Rouge.

During his only college season, Gilbert caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns before opting out of LSU’s final two games. After he opted out, Gilbert left Baton Rouge and returned home to Georgia.

Gilbert has not returned to Baton Rouge since opting out, although Ed Orgeron said he would leave the door open for the tight end to return.

“We love Arik, he entered the transfer portal, we are still in contact with his mother and his family,” Orgeron said back in December. “Hopefully he wants to come back. I just wish the best for him.”

After entering the transfer portal, Gilbert announced his commitment to Florida back in February, only to decommit from the Gators on March 1.

During his recruitment out of high school, most recruiting analysts believed Gilbert would be picking between Georgia or Alabama. His decision to commit to LSU was a surprise at the time but has proven to be just the first of many to come for the young tight end.

Now we wait to find out how where the next chapter of this saga will lead.
