Leonard Fournette had a big rookie season for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he instantly made his presence known.

The former LSU standout rushed for 1,040 yards and nine TDs in his debut (averaging 3.9 yards per carry), but he’s made a tweak to his body that could pay dividends in 2018: he’s lighter and quicker. Fournette will enter the season 11 pounds less than he did during his rookie season.

″I feel like I play my best at that weight – 223, 224 – that’s what I played in college,″ Fournette said, via Jacksonville.com. ″Why not? I don’t want to be average. I want to be above average, be the greatest one to play this game. I feel lighter, quicker and I have a lot of my burst.″

Fournette helped lead Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game for the first time in 18 years, and with just a small tweak to his playing weight, he could have another big season. The great players continually tweak their bodies, workout routines and styles in order to evolve and improve as players. The LSU great is doing just that.

If it’s possible, defenses will be paying more attention to Fournette this season than last, too.

In addition to Fournette, former Auburn back Corey Grant and former Alabama back TJ Yeldon help solidify one of the NFL’s best backfields, and OC Nathaniel Hackett is excited about it.

″It is a really good backfield right now,″ Hackett said. ″I am excited. That is another group that you know you are excited to see where they are going to go. For me, I want to be sure to keep all three of them as fresh as possible. It is a long season, and we like to run the ball. You definitely want to get the ball in all three of those guys hands.

″T.J.’s intelligence level is off the charts and his ability to run the ball – that is really, really improving. You can see more explosion start to come from him. Just his ability to pass protect and be able to catch the ball from the backfield.″
