Ed Orgeron comments on the loss of LSU’s spring, his Louisiana coronavirus PSA
Just like everyone else in America, Ed Orgeron and his LSU football program have had to suddenly hit the pause button in Baton Rouge.
The Tigers were revving up spring camp just before the coronavirus outbreak started to hit home for many in this country and the SEC and the NCAA shut down all sports activities.
During a recent interview with WAFB Channel 9 reporter Jacques Doucet, Orgeron shared his reaction to the daily changes that have altered LSU’s spring plans down in Baton Rouge.
“It’s very discouraging,” Orgeron said in the interview. “We are in the middle of spring ball, new quarterback, new coaches, we were all excited. They told us Friday afternoon we can’t practice anymore, we were supposed to have a great scrimmage. I think the guys are discouraged, but you know what, we are going to have to deal with this, compete as best we can and stay together.”
If you missed it, LSU AD Scott Woodward held a teleconference on Monday to discuss the current state of affairs in Baton Rouge. The biggest items Woodward hit on — the LSU spring game will not be played and the SEC baseball season will also be canceled by the league in the near future.
Here’s what Orgeron had to say when asked if he thought LSU would play a spring game this year.
“It doesn’t look like it and I don’t know,” Orgeron answered. “Whatever they tell us to do, we are going to do but we are just taking it day by day.”
Orgeron had been in the news recently as the LSU coach was asked to do a PSA for Louisiana to help curb the spread of the virus in the state. Orgeron says he was happy to step up when called upon by the Governor.
“I want to thank the Governor, he asked me to do it. It was an honor to do it,” Orgeron noted. “Anytime he asks me to do anything, it’s an honor to represent the state of Louisiana and help the people any way I can.”
Finally, when it comes to what LSU football fans are supposed to do now without spring football, Doucet noted fans will be rewatching LSU’s 15-0 2019 season on repeat in the coming days and weeks.
“That’s good! I want to watch it too because I never watched it on TV,” Orgeron joked.
Until further notice, LSU football remains on top of the collegiate sports world and nothing can take that away from them.
