Ed Orgeron praised the performance of LSU’s defense during the team’s first scrimmage on Saturday. The other side of the ball? Not so much.

With four quarterbacks rotating, each getting reps with the first- and second-string unit, the Tigers’ offense wasn’t at its best. Orgeron discussed the issues while speaking to the media after the scrimmage.

“We had way too many mistakes,” Orgeron said. “Way too many penalties, way too many false starts. Sometimes when we were executing we made some good plays, but we shot ourselves in the foot with too many penalties.

“It was the first preseason game and the guys are fired up and trying to do too much. We’ve got to settle down and stay focused.”

Lowell Narcisse (6-for-14, 122 yards), Joe Burrow (7-for-13, 118), Myles Brennan (5-for-10, 94) and Justin McMillan (8-for-13, 83) all played at quarterback for the Tigers.

K’Lavon Chaisson, Devin White and Michael Divinity combined for five sacks on defense.

“I thought the front seven was dominant today, like I expected them to be,” Orgeron said.

There is still time for LSU’s offense to correct the issues that Orgeron discussed. The Tigers open the season against Miami on Sept. 2.
