Max Johnson will again be LSU’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Arkansas. But he won’t be the only player taking snaps under center during the contest.

On Monday, Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron discussed his team’s QB plans while meeting with the media, confirming that Johnson is currently the starter. However, Orgeron plans on also playing freshman Garrett Nussmeier this week. And there’s the potential for the starting job to be up for grabs.

“If Max plays better than Garrett, he’s going to be the starter. If Garrett plays better than Max, he’s going to be the starter,” Orgeron told reporters, including Wilson Alexander of The Advocate.

Johnson has been LSU’s quarterback for the majority of the season, passing for 2,169 yards, 22 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Meanwhile, Nussmeier has gotten only limited playing time, passing for 150 yards and a touchdown in his debut college season.

But Nussmeier could earn more time on the field with a strong showing this Saturday. The Tigers have only 3 games remaining, but that isn’t going to stop them from evaluating their QB options.

Nussmeier has already appeared in 3 games, and he can’t play in more than 4 if he wants to use his redshirt. However, that seems like it won’t be a concern. Orgeron said during his Monday press conference that Nussmeier made it known he wanted to play more after not taking the field for this past Saturday’s loss at Alabama.

So it seems likely that Nussmeier will burn his redshirt at some point in November. But perhaps he’ll get an opportunity to showcase his skills and become the favorite for the starting job in 2022.

LSU is set to face Arkansas on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
