LSU fans are hoping that Ed Orgeron has gained a future Tiger great in tight end Arik Gilbert.

The true freshman from the Atlanta area, ranked out of high school as the No. 1 player at his position and the No. 5 overall player in the country, will be one of the focal points of the Tigers’ offense as the defending champions look to pick up where they left off in 2019. As a senior at Marietta (Ga.), he hauled in 105 catches for 1,860 yards and 15 touchdowns.

“He’s going to be a matchup nightmare for everybody,” ESPN college football analyst David Pollack said on a recent episode of his podcast co-hosted with Kevin Negandhi and Kirk Herbstreit. “He’s going to catch the ball. He’s going to be great after the catch, especially for a tight end. He’s going to look like a wide receiver. There’s just so many things you’ll be able to do with that guy to just win.”

A weapon like Gilbert should benefit quarterback Myles Garrett, who watched Joe Burrow re-write the college football record books and will now take his place as the Tigers’ signal-caller in 2020. And if early hype on Gilbert translates to on-the-field success, LSU’s offense, while not nearly as potent as last year’s group, will be tough to deal with once more this year.
