Derek Stingley Jr. recently revealed his top three college choices of LSU, Florida, and Texas. According to his father, Derek Stingley Sr., the three are in fact three finalists with all other schools out of the running for his son’s services.

The five-star defensive back from Baton Rouge is currently ranked as the No. 25 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 2 cornerback by 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Following his son’s decision to name his finalists, Stingley joined Baton Rouge-based ESPN 104.5 FM radio show Off the Bench to discuss the latest with his son’s recruitment. However, before diving into his thoughts on college recruitment, Stingley shared these comments on his son’s ability to play both ways at the next level.

“He has played both ways. In my opinion, he’s just as good of a wide receiver as a DB… His hand-eye coordination is sick. Out of 11 games played last year, he had 11 interceptions,” Stingley said on the program.

He then shared a brief story on an encounter with Nick Saban during one of his son’s events.

“At one point we sat down with,” Stingley said, “I know our audience isn’t going to like this, we sat in front of Nick Saban and (he) said, ‘Oh my God. You could play both offense and defense for me.’ ”

Stingley then touched on LSU, the program his son named as his leader this offseason and was once committed to as a freshman in high school.

“LSU offered him at 14 years old. It was Les Miles that offered him. They have been there from the start and that relationship with him and (DB coach) Corey Raymond has grown over the years,” Stingley said. “He’s visited the campus throughout the years, on the camp circuit, from the 7-on-7 circuit… he’s been to plenty of games and now that his recruitment has heated up, his relationship with Coach Aranda, Coach O, it’s stronger. I know he feels comfortable around there because he knows the building, he knows the ins-and-outs of everything with LSU. That’s why he made them his leader — as of right now.”

Stingley explained the fact that his son decommitted from the Tigers a year after his commitment due to the rushed nature of his original decision. However, despite backing off that pledge, LSU has always been near to his heart, according to his father. Even better news for Tiger fan, Stingley claimed that his son is down to just these three programs and following an official visit to Florida this summer, a final decision will be made.

Here is what he had to say regarding his son’s timeline for his decision.

“It will be some time during the summer… It will be final. It won’t be another school jumps in there and grabs his attention, we are not doing that as a family,” he said. “These are his final three and there is no one else that will come in and pull him out of there.”
