After finishing 15-0 and winning the 2020 national championship, LSU is now just 5-6 in its last 11 games following its 38-27 season-opening loss at UCLA last Saturday.

The recent run of mediocrity has many wondering if Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron should be worrying about his future in Baton Rouge.

One notable LSU alum, renowned political consultant James Carville, believes that Orgeron’s not only on the hot seat but that he knows it as well.

On Friday, Carville spoke about the situation on Tony Kornheiser’s “90 Seconds on Soccer” podcast.

“It was not good,” said Carville of the UCLA loss, a game that he attended. “Yes, there is a lot of heat. I mean, he came back and had that staggering season in 2019, and he may come back again, or he may be Gene Chizik. But there is heat on him, and he knows it. It’s pretty clear. That was a very disappointing football game to say the least.”

LSU, which dropped out of the AP Poll after losing to the Bruins, has 2 games next on the schedule where it will be heavy favorites. But after that, SEC play gets started and Carville said he has serious concerns, especially when it comes to the Tigers’ pass defense.

“We should beat McNeese and Central Michigan but remember we play Mississippi State and they (had like) 640 aerial years on us. And UCLA’s receivers were getting behind our defensive backs with consistency,” Carville said. “We’re going to have to get better, and we’ve had a top-5 recruiting class for the last 5 years. I don’t think UCLA’s had a top-20 recruiting class.”

Before moving on to other topics, Carville made it clear that the status quo simply won’t be enough for LSU’s football program right now.

“They’re going to have to change and everybody knows it.”
