When Ed Orgeron was named full-time head coach in Baton Rouge, one of the first promises he made to LSU fans was to lock down the state and keep Louisiana’s best prospects from leaving for other schools. That was easier said than done but the Tigers have progressively done just that under Orgeron and just took a big step toward doing the same in the 2020 recruiting cycle by landing the commitment of the state’s top overall prospect.

Not only did LSU just land a commitment from Baton Rouge native Jaquelin Roy, but the Tigers also beat out key division rivals Alabama and Texas A&M for his services.

Following this news, LSU now holds commitments from three of the top four in-state prospects for the 2020 recruiting cycle. The other, offensive lineman Sedrick Van Pran, is currently uncommitted.

Interestingly enough, this is the second time LSU has landed a commitment from Roy. He pledged to the program last September, only to back off that pledge in February. This time, expect his commitment to stick, as he looks to head into his final high school season without distraction before enrolling at LSU.

The 6-foot-3, 289-pound University Lab product is rated as a four-star prospect, the No. 5 defensive tackle in the nation and the state’s top overall prospect according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Thanks in part to his outstanding play on the field, his University Lab program has captured back-to-back state titles and will be looking to go three-for-three this fall.

Roy’s commitment gives the Tigers 22 total commitments for the 2020 recruiting cycle and bumps up the class ranking to No. 3 nationally, jumping Ohio State in the process, with LSU only behind Clemson and Alabama at this point.

Here is a breakdown of the program’s latest recruiting class:
