There are plenty of traditions around LSU football, a program that is rich in history. One of them is the jersey No. 18.

The No. 18 has “became synonymous with success — both on and off the field — as well as a selfless attitude that has become the epitome of being an LSU football player,” per the Tigers’ official site. It started with Matt Mauck, who wore the number while leading the Tigers to the national championship in the 2003 season, and it was passed down to Jacob Hester and then multiple players since.

In 2021, the No. 18 will belong to senior kicker Avery Atkins.

Atkins is entering his fourth season at LSU, and he’s had a ton of success on kickoffs, making it difficult for opposing teams to try to return the ball. It’s clear that Atkins’ impact on the program extends beyond the field, though, considering he’s been picked by the team to wear the illustrious No. 18.

On Wednesday, the Tigers announced their decision on Twitter:

Atkins will wear No. 18 in game action for the first time on Saturday, when LSU opens the season against UCLA at the Rose Bowl at 8:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
